Biography

Sherrill and Edward Schiff, who were both Jews, welcomed Adam Schiff into the world on June 22, 1960, in Framingham, Massachusetts. His father was a garment salesman, while his mother was a real estate agent. In 1970, the family relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, and then in 1972, they made the journey to Alamo, California. At Monte Vista High School in Danville, California, where he played soccer and was chosen as the class salutatorian, Schiff received his education as a teenager. After enrolling at Stanford University, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1982. Schiff then enrolled at Harvard Law School, where he graduated with his Juris Doctor in 1985.

Law Career

After receiving his law degree, Schiff worked as a legal clerk for the US District Court for the Central District of California Judge William Matthew Byrne Jr. for a year. He then worked as an Assistant US Attorney in the Central District of California’s US Attorney’s office from 1987 until 1993. In that capacity, Schiff became well-known for his work on the third trial prosecution of former FBI agent-turned-Soviet spy Richard Miller.

State Senate of California

Schiff was chosen to represent California’s 21st district in the State Senate in 1996. He presided over the Joint Committee on the Arts, the Select Committee on Juvenile Justice, and the Judiciary Committee throughout his four-year term. The Blue Line light rail expansion to Pasadena was one among the proposals that Schiff drafted that were made into law. He also created certain divisive, futile laws that followed other politicians’ regressive “tough on crime” stance.

US House of Representatives

In the 2000 election, Schiff competed against Republican incumbent James E. Rogan for the 27th congressional district of California. As a result of his victory, he is now the district’s second Democratic representative since the district’s creation in 1913. After the 2000 census, the district was given a new number, the 29th, and became significantly more Democratic, giving Schiff little competition in the years that followed. He received 11 votes for reelection as a consequence. The district only became more Democratic after being renumbered as the 28th in 2010 and the 30th in 2020.

At the beginning of his time in the House, Schiff supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq. His presentation of US House Resolution 106, which acknowledged the Armenian genocide, the creation of the nonpartisan and bicameral Congressional Caucus for the Freedom of the Press, and his support for surveillance changes, such as his Telephone Metadata Reform Act, were less contentious. Schiff later became the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee in 2019. In that capacity, he started an investigation into Donald Trump’s ties to Russia and served as one of the principal detectives on Trump’s initial impeachment probe. After that, Schiff was named to the Select Committee to Inquire into the US Capitol Attack on January 6, 2001.

As a Writer

The New Yorker revealed in 2018 that Schiff wrote scripts as a pastime, including an espionage drama and a murder mystery. He later released a non-fiction book in 2021 titled “Midnight in Washington: How We Almost Lost Our Democracy and Still Could,” which discussed the negative repercussions of the Trump administration.
